Ayoze Perez has spoken of the 'special feeling' of scoring against former club Newcastle United.

The Spaniard opened the scoring against the Magpies in a 3-0 away win for Leicester City on New Year's Day.

Perez joined the Foxes from Newcastle on a deal worth around £30m in the summer after the best part of five years.

He struck up a bond with Newcastle fans during his lengthy stay in the North East, but striking against his former club still felt 'special'.

“It was a great win," he told LCFC TV. "(It’s) a good start to the New Year, three more points and we keep pushing.

“It’s been a great couple of days for me. I’m feeling better and better, feeling more confident, fitter and that is very important for me. I’m feeling great, improving the stats and winning, we keep winning [and] that’s the main thing.

“It means a lot obviously, back home it’s a special feeling but to be able to score is a great feeling, but the most important [thing] is the win. It’s a tough place to come and play and we did very well.”

Perez went on to discuss the importance of the win which kept City second in the league. He added: "(It was) very important.

"It was a tough period, very busy and we were able to get back, bounce back to (a) winning feeling and the team is proving we’ve got the hunger and ambition to keep winning.

“Well it’s another busy period, (a) busy month for us but we’ve got the ambition.

"We know what we are capable of and we will keep pushing.

"We will keep pushing. We are in a great, great position and hopefully we can celebrate something special at the end of the year.”
